Berny Dabarera   My, and today's standard of a hero   Mr. Rickles                                                                                                                                                                   2/8/09

The hero has always been there, there are thousands of stories, legends, lore, even actual events where the hero takes part in.   But are all the hero's all the same?                                                                                                                            What qualities are and characteristics are necessary for people today in our time to see someone as a hero.  What about Odysseus?  Would people today see him and his actions in the heroic manner, that people did thousands of years ago while reading or being told his story.                                                                                                                                                      From today's view point I'd say the hero is nearly slightly more than half way the same as back in the day, just maybe a bit reworded. Today people want a hero who is kind, merciful, forgiving, but ready to dish out the discipline or the hurt when truly needed or just necessary.  A obviously intellectual hero, one who knows what he's doing, one who plans, resourceful , cunning, cleaver, all other important ones.

                                                                                        One who believes in

what's right, or just has a strong belief in to what he believes is right, which is usually the right, right.  That reverent god part . . .well that's kind of a sticky subject . .I'd say not so looked upon but maybe respected if they do.  Being able to persuade others, just being good at talking saying what needs to be said, and what will fix things and will put people at ease is still a important part of being a hero. Being aggressive well, as I said earlier being able to dish out the discipline or the hurt is important so yeah to a degree being a aggressive is important.  Bernard and sisters                                                                                                                    Now for Odysseus and his qualities, honestly on the most part his characteristics seem to be able to take today's criticism or pokes at what a hero is on the most part.  As I said on the most part Odysseus is a resourceful, strong, courageous, patient, restrained, reverent to gods, articulate, able to persuade   with speech, morally sensitive, and aggressive. At a glance I'd say that could keep up with today's expectations well enough. I mean those are things people want in a hero, even if the hero didn't have all of those characteristics, and just a few. They'd still be looked upon as a hero. For starters his resourceful trait. A hero today, needs to be witty and be able to get out of situations of any kind using what they can. Well being strong today I think doesn't really make the hero like it did before, by today standards only being strong doesn't make you a hero. Next even today a hero should be courageous, they should be able to take risks for the better without hesitation before, or remorse afterwards. Today, being patient is not only expected of a hero but everyone, so it's not such a surprising quality. Now being restrained just like being polite is not such a out there quality it's quite normal for a hero to be so. And I could go on and on but I think I made my point. That classic view of a hero in my opinion is still engraved in or standards and minds of people even today.
